What is a Dahlia Hybridizer?

These are people who harvest seeds from dahlia flowers for new flower propagation.

This process takes 4+ years from start to finish, creating a new dahlia variety.

First they must acquire the seeds, dry them, and prepare them to be cultivated for growing in the next 4 years production. They must produce enough tubers of this new variety to be distributed to Trial Gardens for ratings, and exhibited at Flower Shows for viewing, judging, and points. These are referred to as seedlings at the shows and are judged against other same like seedlings in their category. If a variety does well through this process, it can then be named and introduced as a new variety through the Dahlia Federation and the ADS/American Dahlia Society. The naming of these new dahlias is up to the grower. Many of these growers have their own suffix to identify their variety introductions. Examples are Vista, Parkland, Goshen, Bloomquist, Wynn, SB, Sandia, Hannah, GG, et al.

In our Whatcom County Dahlia Society, many of our members are known for hybridizing and introducing new originations. The varieties that have been named are available at our Tubers sale the first week of April at Bloedel Donovan. Many of the Whatcom County Dahlia Society (WCDS) member introductions can be viewed during the growing season. You can view them growing in their gardens and at WCDS Flower Show in September.
